As part of the Newcastle group on Couch Surfing (an online community of travellers willing to host, wanting to be hosted, or wanting to travel together and do fun things) I often see newly arrived folk wanting a place to live for short or long term, sometimes international students here for a semester, sometimes people relocating here for work.
On the Newcastle group here is a handy conversation thread about some of the costs of living and places you can look for a room – https://www.couchsurfing.org/n/threads/moving-to-newcastle+12034237
Here are some useful share housing links;

I live in Jesmond, approx 10km west of the Newcastle city center. Jesmond is close to a shopping centre, main bus routes, and of course the Newcastle University. It is this proximity to the university that makes Jesmond and the surrounding suburbs popular for share houses (rooms for rent and “student accommodation”).
